Fort Worth Zoo’s baby bonobo receives her name
After two weeks of public voting, “Layla” is declared the winner
|
FORT WORTH, Texas – The first bonobo born in Texas now has a name: Layla. More than 1,300 votes were cast on the five names chosen by Zoo staff that reflected the young bonobo’s personality and heritage. Layla, Swahili for ”dark beauty,” was the clear winner, receiving more than half of the total votes.
Kelly Giadrosich of Fort Worth was chosen as the grand prize winner of the Name the Baby contest and will receive a gift basket that includes a Fort Worth Zoo T-shirt, bonobo plush, framed photo of the Zoo's baby bonobo and one family four-pack admission tickets to the Fort Worth Zoo.
Layla, born April 12, 2010, has joined the current troop of six bonobos at the Zoo. She is the third successful offspring for her 20-year-old mother, Lucy, and the first for 34-year-old sire, Kevin. Lucy, a protective and attentive mother, can be seen holding her baby close in the Zoo's World of Primates exhibit. The Fort Worth Zoo is the only zoo in Texas to house bonobos and the only zoo in the nation to house representatives of all four Great Ape species - gorillas, orangutans, chimpanzees and the critically endangered bonobo.
The nationally acclaimed Fort Worth Zoo has been ranked the No. 5 zoo in the nation by USA Travel Guide and the No. 1 attraction in the DFW Metroplex by Zagat survey. The Zoo is home to more than 500 animal species and a world-famous reptile collection, housed in the new Museum of Living Art (MOLA). The institution’s focus on education and conservation is second to none, enhancing the lives of more than one million visitors annually.
