Fort Worth Zoo Celebrates 100th Anniversary

10-week celebration runs July 16 through September 24

 

FORT WORTH, Texas - Join in the wild 100th anniversary celebration at the Fort Worth Zoo! The 10-week celebration, focusing on a specific decade each week, will run from Thursday, July 16 until Thursday, September 24. Each week will feature keeper chats, live Wild Wonders stage shows and animal enrichment activities so you can learn all about the Zoo's exciting 100-year history.

 

The Zoo's kick off celebration will feature a giant Zoo birthday "cake" at the elephant exhibit, keeper chats, animal enrichment activities throughout the park and Wild Wonders stage shows at 11 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.

 

Each week of the celebration will focus on a specific decade and feature keeper chats on a designated Animal Ambassador so you can learn more about the Zoo's exciting history and its residents! The schedule is as follows:

  • Week 1 - Lion (1909-1919)
  • Week 2 - Elephant (1920-1929)
  • Week 3 - Chimpanzee (1930-1939)
  • Week 4 - Hippo (1940-1949)
  • Week 5 - Herpetarium (1960-1969)*
  • Week 6 - Great Barrier Reef in Australian Outback (1950-1959)*
  • Week 7 - African Diorama - kudu, gerenuk, zebra (1970-1979)
  • Week 8 - Black rhino (1980-1989)
  • Week 9 - Flamingo Bay (1990-1999)
  • Week 10 - Black bears in Texas Wild! (2000-2009)

 

*We are celebrating the 1950s and 1960s out of sequence in preparation for moving our Herpetarium animals to their new home in the Museum of Living Art (MOLA).

 

You can also help us celebrate by 'adopting' one of the Zoo's Animal Ambassadors to contribute to its care and feeding for one full year. The Fort Worth Zoo is open 365 days a year and regular admission rates are $12 for adults, $8 for children (ages 3 to 12), FREE for toddlers 2 and under and $7 for seniors. Admission is half-price every Wednesday.

 

The oldest zoo in Texas, the Fort Worth Zoo was founded in 1909 with one lion, two bear cubs, an alligator, a coyote, a peacock and a few rabbits. From these humble beginnings, the Zoo has grown into a nationally ranked facility, housing nearly 5,000 native and exotic animals.  More than 1 million guests visit the Zoo each year, enjoying the park's natural habitat exhibits and coming face-to-face with both native and exotic animals. The Fort Worth Zoo is an accredited member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.

"Adopt" the Zoo's 100th Anniversary Animal Ambassadors

Each animal to be featured throughout 10-week celebration

 

FORT WORTH, Texas - Join in the wild 100th birthday celebration at the Fort Worth Zoo by adopting any of our 10 Animal Ambassadors! Each animal will be highlighted during the 10-week celebration representing the Zoo's 10-decade existence. Each week will feature keeper chats, live Wild Wonders stage shows and animal enrichment activities so you can learn all about your adopted animal and the Zoo's exciting 100-year history.

 

While the "adopted" Animal Ambassadors cannot join your family at home, adoption proceeds contribute to their care and feeding for an entire year. Home to nearly 5,000 animals that represent more than 500 species, the Fort Worth Zoo spends more than $850,000 a year feeding all of its wild residents. That's why we need your help! Help us celebrate, and "adopt" one of the Zoo's Animal Ambassadors to contribute to its care and feeding for one full year.
