Because they like to eat shrimp! The birds' pink plumage is caused by the pigment in small, pink-colored invertebrates they eat, like shrimp. Shrimp contain these carotenoid pigments, and because flamingos eat a lot of shrimp, they absorb the color that eventually turns their feathers pink. We have a grand total of 120 flamingos here at the Zoo 37 Chilean, 52 lesser, and 31 American.
