Fort Worth Zoo celebrates Asian elephant calf’s first birthday

FORT WORTH, Texas – Asian elephant calf Belle will turn 1 year old on Monday, July 7, and the Fort Worth Zoo is hosting a summer birthday party in her honor all day Friday, July 11, Saturday, July 12 and Sunday, July 13.

The weekend-long celebration will feature birthday-themed entertainment for all guests to enjoy, including treats for the first 1,000 guests each day. Guests can also enjoy keeper chats and animal enrichment activities at various exhibits throughout the Zoo, including Belle’s birthday treat each day at 10:15 a.m. in the Asian elephant yard.

Belle’s birthday party is free with Zoo admission — $12 for adults, $9 for children ages 3 to 12, $9 for seniors ages 65 and up, and free for children 2 and younger. The event is free for Zoo members.

Belle was born on July 7, 2013, to the Zoo’s 40-year-old Asian elephant, Rasha, after a 22-month gestation, weighing 330 pounds and standing 38 inches tall. Belle is the second elephant calf birth in the Fort Worth Zoo’s 105-year history (Bluebonnet was born in December 1998) and her arrival was a city-wide celebration. Zoo officials announced the arrival of a male Asian elephant calf nearly a month after Belle’s birth. Bowie was born on Aug. 5 and preparations are underway for his upcoming birthday bash.
