Baby African penguin born at the Zoo

It’s a … girl!

Our littlest penguin is a girl and following her mother Daisy’s floral namesake, her name is Rosie. She has grown quite a bit since we last saw her, but Rosie is still spending much of her time nesting with her parents. Keep your eyes on the nest boxes in the African penguin exhibit for glimpses of the newest addition.

Have you noticed the rocky structures in the African penguin exhibit? Those nest boxes were created by TCU – Texas Christian University students from the TCU College of Science & Engineering and TCU College of Fine Arts in December 2019. Since then, several breeding pairs have taken up residence in the nests. Both the male and female will contribute to building the nest, incubating eggs and feeding and caring for their young. This video shows nesting behaviors from some of the Zoo’s penguin pairs!
