Born to be wild: The world's first Mountain Bongo Sanctuary will help save the animal from extinction

On behalf of Mount Kenya Wildlife Conservancy (MKWC), we are excited to share the news that five bongos have been released into the Mawingu Mountain Bongo Sanctuary in Nanyuki, Kenya -- the first-ever bongo sanctuary in the world! Fort Worth Zoo staff was instrumental in the process of coordinating, screening, transporting and repatriating 18 bongos from several U.S. zoos to MKWC. The five bongos released were direct descendants of these 18 bongos. This release is the first of many planned for MKWC, aiming to increase wild populations of the critically endangered species.

You can see bongos up close at the Zoo! Our two bongos live near the front entrance across from the bonobos.
