The giraffe herd grew by 6 feet and 2 inches! A male calf was born to mom Acacia on June 15 and can now be seen out on exhibit with the rest of the giraffe herd and Savanna residents. Zoo members, guests and social media followers were invited to particiapte in an online vote to help name the not-so-little guy. Mom's name is Acacia, which is a type of shrub native to Africa and its leaves are part of the giraffes' diet. Staff narrowed the internal list down to two names, each has its own significance, Alfalfa and Nakuru.
Alfalfa - a plant, like Mom's name; also part of the herd's diet
Nakuru - the national park in the region of which this species of giraffe is found
More than 5,400 votes were cast and it was a close race, but Nakuru edged out Alfalfa by a few hundred votes. Thank you to all who helped us name this little guy!
