Four extra hooves recently joined the herd in the African Savanna! Meet the Zoo’s newest giraffe calf, Pele (pronounced Pay-lay)! She may look short compared to the rest of the herd, but don’t be fooled – she was born at a towering 6 feet 2 inches tall! She was born on June 12 to mom Acacia on the hottest day of the year to date. While we can’t say for certain there hasn’t been a hotter day since, we still think her name matches this feisty gal. Her keepers named her after the Hawaiian goddess of fire. Fitting, right? You can visit her in the African Savanna with the rest of the herd or bring home a mini version of Pele by adopting her.
