Meerkat Mounds

The meerkats are a guest favorite, and there is little wonder why. These playful creatures are extremely social and scurry around their exhibit to the delight of children and adults alike. Meerkats live in complex groups and carry out clearly defined duties within their communities. Keen observers may be able to pick out which role each meerkat is playing, such as babysitter, sentry, hunter and teacher.

The conditions of Meerkat Mounds mirror those of the African savannah. The exhibit is located at the mouth of the African Savannah exhibit across from the entrance to Asian Falls. Visitors can peer into the meerkat’s habitat from several angles: a Plexiglas wall encompasses the exhibit for maximum viewing, a bubble window carved into one of the outer walls provides an up-close experience and a boardwalk perch allows for an aerial view.
